WHAT COMMON CLAIMS ARE EASILY PREVENTABLE?
Backing - Hitting an object such as a parked car, building or person is the most frequent tool truck claim. Reducing frequency would have a measurable impact on claims payout by insurance companies and would lower the premium need. Use of a backup camera or a back up alarm as well as using a spotter will help reduce this type of claim.
Hitting low hanging objects Collision with signs, awnings and low hanging utility lines are examples of costly claims that can be avoided by being aware of your surroundings.
Improper lane change Accidents involving other vehicles due to sudden lane changes are a significant amount of total claims paid. Safe operation, including adjusted and functionally operating side view mirrors can help prevent these costly claims. We also recommend that if you miss a destination on your route that you proceed to the safest place to turn around to reach that stop. The extra time you spend turning around will be far less than the time spent at the accident scene and time allocated for answering a summons from local law enforcement for causing the collision.
Theft While many may think that people do not pay attention to car alarms, there is proof that activating your alarm whenever you leave your truck can prevent thieves from breaking into and or stealing your truck. Furthermore, anything you can do to discourage theft including always locking your truck, installing bars over vents and windows, and installing an electronic ignition/fuel cutoff device will result in lower claims and therefore lower premiums.
We have many other examples of loss control and claim prevention. The above are just a few of the many ways you can work on controlling losses and lowering premium for your industry.
